Foreign students accommodation in Malaysia
Whilst you are staying in Malaysia, you will have a variety of accommodation options available to you. Your choices will depend largely on whether your college or university has student hostels, what city you are located in, and the amount of your monthly budget.
When you have applied to and accepted a course at a particular college or university, you will need to indicate that you will require accommodation (unless you already have something arranged).
Do not assume that you will automatically be given accommodation, but as a general rule, international students will be given priority over other students.
Every university and college has an accommodation office that deals with applications and inquiries for accommodation, so if you have any questions or problems, you should contact one of their staff.
On campus, living can be just accommodation without any facility or it may come with facilities for students to prepare their own meals and to do their own laundry. Typically on-campus accommodation includes a shared or private bedroom with bathroom facilities in student residences. The cost of on-campus accommodation can be anywhere from RM 350.00 to RM 650.00 a month.
Off-campus living in Malaysia is very common among the local and international students, as most of the housing areas are located within a short distance of the college or university. The housing areas are normally consisting of houses (single/double story), apartments and condominiums which may have 3 or 4 bedrooms together with a living hall, kitchen, and bathrooms.
The landlord may require the students for a minimum one year contract (lease) agreement with a deposit of 2 or 3 months rental. The rentals are to be paid monthly and other utilities such as water, electricity; gas, and cable TV are to be paid by the students themselves according to the monthly usage. The cost of off-campus accommodation per student can be anywhere from RM 150.00 to RM 900.00 a month depending on the area of living, type, furniture, facilities, and the number of students sharing.
